Lombardsijde: MKB Ramien-Stp Ramien

PART 2: The Military Barracks

Situation on July 2 2000.  All color pictures are taken on September 14 2007.
Page Revamped and corrected on June 11 2007, September 23 and 24 2007.

Google Earth map with the numbered locations.  Don't look for any logic in the numbering, they are just random.

NGI map of the locations.

Lonely guardhouse at the Lombardsijde beach.  This sure isn't its original location.  Left January 17 2006.  Right July 2 2000.

Number 11:At the entrance of the military base we can see the remains of trenches and brick constructions.  No further investigation was possible.

Second Google Earth map with more precise locations of the construcitons.

Number 18: A non-standard Vf construction or Garage for Pak ?  Situation in 2000.
There is 1 large room and two smaller ones.

_

Left: The Vf in 2000, right: situation 2007, nothing has changed.

_

_

Bullet holes everywhere inside the bunker, but post war I presume.  The third room leads to some kind of emergency exit.
Entrance to the small second room.

_

_

Third and smallest room with second crew exit or entrance.  Currently we didn't find any standard construction plans of this bunker.

_

Notice the hole in the bunker.

Left: The fence is obstructing view on this hidden bunkers which cannot be entered, this is how I found it in 2000.
2007: I believe the ammunition bunkers(17 and 20) I found on the Open Door Days below are the same as the ones above:

Number 20 Ammunition pit.

Number 21 Third Tobruk 58c

Number 22 and 23: Water Tower and Gun Emplacement.

Two pictures above: This appears to be the remains of a Gun emplacement near the watertower.  A second gun emplacement is not far away, but I didn't find it.  It has been confirmed by someone else however.
The watertower seems to be very old, maybe a remaining artifact from WWII.

Number 12: Gun Emplacement

5.2m diameter Gun emplacement.  The attachement bolts are still visible.  WWII?

Vf Generator bunker.  Picture June 11 2005.

Monument commemorating Hubert Thoret(or Thuret?) a French Luitenant who died here during WWI.

_

Number 14:Above: Monument in 2000.

More than one year ago I told on this website that the monument was in very bad state and that I had the impression that Hubert Thuret was completely forgotten...  Untill I received an email of someone who told me the monument would be restored in a proper maner till the Open Door days on September 14-15 2007 at the Army Barracks at Lombardsijde.  I had the impression that the cement was still wet when I've made my visit during the Open Door.  I will also probably never know if the restauration did take place because of my comments on this webpage...

Nevertheless, I must congratulate the Army people for having done a very nice job !

Update November 11 2007

Apparently the people of forumeerstewereldoorlog.nl seem tho have made a major contribution to the restauration of the monument.
